US sales tax · 50 states + DC
You crossed Texas eleven days ago.
Economic nexus doesn't announce itself. TaxEqual measures your Shopify sales against every state's own threshold, tells you before the state does, and hands you the numbers your return asks for.
Free plan, no card. 14-day trial on paid plans.
What it does
Four things, each of which is a full-time job by hand.
Nexus
Every threshold, watched continuously
Each state's rule in its own terms — sales, transactions, the AND or the OR between them, and the measurement window it actually uses. You are warned as you approach and again the moment you cross.
Calculation
Tax resolved line by line
Every order line is placed in its state, county, city and special districts and taxed by product category. We show what you collected against what was owed, so a shortfall is a number, not a surprise.
Returns
Reports shaped like the return
Per state, per filing period, on that state's own frequency and due dates — summary, jurisdiction breakdown, and the transactions behind every figure. Export as CSV or PDF and file straight from it.
Coverage
Sales we don't see still count
Marketplace orders already remitted by the channel are separated out, off-platform revenue is folded in, and multiple stores under one entity roll up together — because that is how a state measures you.
How it works
Three steps, then it runs without you.
Connect
Install from the Shopify App Store. Orders, refunds, products and locations start syncing immediately, and you pick how far back to reach.
- No code, no theme changes
- Historical import up to 24 months
Watch
We track all 51 jurisdictions against your real sales and tell you where you stand — in the app and by email, before a deadline rather than after one.
- Approaching and crossed alerts
- Returns due and overdue reminders
File
Open the period, check the breakdown, export it, file with the state, mark it filed. The history stays, so any state can be reconciled later.
- CSV and PDF, filing-ready
- Filing history per state
Coverage
Fifty-one jurisdictions, one view.
Every US state plus the District of Columbia, each measured against its own threshold on its own rolling window. The ones that need you are the ones that change colour.
- Registered
- Threshold met
- Approaching
- Below threshold
Illustrative — your own map is built from your orders.
Pricing
Priced on the states you file in, not on your revenue.

Questions
The things merchants ask before installing.
Do you file and pay my returns for me?
No — and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. TaxEqual prepares the figures, the jurisdiction breakdown and the filing calendar; you submit the return and pay the state. Registering with a state is also yours to do. We are compliance software, not a filing agent, and not tax advice.
Why Shopify only?
Because a connector that treats every platform the same is how order data gets flattened and tax gets computed on the wrong number. We read Shopify's own order, refund, product and location data directly, including which orders a marketplace already remitted on.
How far back can it go?
As far as you need, in windows of up to 24 months per import. You set a sync start date when you install — everything the app reports is bounded by it, so you always know whether a zero means no sales or no data.
What access does it need?
Read access to orders, products and locations, plus Shopify's Protected Customer Data approval — order sync cannot compute a jurisdiction without a shipping destination. We never write to your store.
What happens to customer data?
Shipping city, postcode and the raw order payloads are encrypted at rest; only the state and country codes stay readable, because tax has to be grouped by them. Shopify's customer-deletion requests are honoured automatically.
What if I've already been collecting tax in a state?
The app detects it and asks you to confirm the registration and its filing frequency, rather than assuming. From then on that state files on its own schedule alongside the others.
